“Start building your brand before you make the leap.”

Dr. Kerstin Brehm was performing a cardiac surgery when a thought surfaced with absolute clarity: I don’t want to do this anymore.

It wasn’t burnout or dissatisfaction. It was the certainty that she was meant for something more.

She moved into healthcare consulting, hoping it was the “more” she sought.

But even after reaching another career peak, the familiar pull returned. “Every time I achieved something, I felt destined for more,” she says.

She worked in cardiac surgery, Big 4 consulting, and corporate leadership. In 2023, she finally found her answer: building a portfolio career blending income streams, visibility, and fulfillment. “The ‘more’ I had always been chasing? It turned out to be helping others create their own version of success,” she says.

Leaving an established identity was challenging. “Who was I beyond the surgical theater, boardroom, and corporate world?” she says.

She had to build a brand, attract clients, and package her expertise. Personal branding was not optional. “If people don’t know who you are and what you do, they can’t work with you. Visibility is currency.”

She approached reinvention like surgery—precise and strategic. “I got clear on my strengths, focused on visibility, and gave myself permission to experiment. Pivoting isn’t failure; it’s data collection,” she says.

The biggest lesson? “Stop waiting for external validation and back yourself 100%.”

Today, she helps high achievers build portfolio careers. “My mission is simple: I help people ‘have it all’: a thriving career, financial security, freedom, and a life they love. My dedication hasn’t changed,” she says, adding, “The difference now? I don’t have to choose between my interests; I’ve integrated them all into my career.”

Dr. Kerstin, who moved from Germany to Dubai for a corporate leadership role, has finally gained the freedom she always sought. “I can work from different locations, and last summer, I spent months in Europe while running my business seamlessly. Cape Town is our second home, where I can work while serving clients globally.”

Speaking about her relocation to the emirate, she says, “Dubai’s fast-paced, opportunity driven environment was a perfect match for my ambition, and it turned out to be the launchpad for my entrepreneurial journey.”

Her advice for career shifters? “Think strategically, but don’t overthink it. Just start. And get visible. Start building your brand before you make the leap.”
