About Beyond Cubicles

📢 #BeyondCubicles is a weekly LinkedIn series created by Carolina D’Souza, born out of her own experience transitioning from a corporate career to independent consulting. Since its launch in June 2024, the series has evolved into a platform that showcases the inspiring journeys of several founders who have redefined the traditional 9-to-5.

Through authentic narratives, #BeyondCubicles highlights themes of courage, resilience, and purpose. The stories feature individuals from diverse industries—ranging from tech and education to wellness and adventure—who share their experiences of stepping away from conventional roles to pursue passion-driven careers.

"It was desperation to be free."

After two decades in steady employment, Nisha Sanjeev “kicked herself” out of her comfort zone.

Her journalism career had spanned five jobs across 20 plus years, but the demands had worn her down. “The longest holiday I ever took was two months for maternity leave,” she says.

She was exhausted by the insecurities of being an employee, as well as the lack of mental and emotional space to pursue her passion—writing.

In October 2016, she quit her full-time job.

“It wasn’t inspiration; it was desperation to be free,” she says.

But freedom wasn’t as straightforward as she imagined. “The insecurity got worse, and even with all the time and space, I felt more constrained,” she says.

By 2017, Nisha began to embrace her journey.

She started with editing and proofreading, eventually moving on to writing biographies and non-fiction books. Her work expanded to include book-writing workshops, publishing consultations, and one-on-one coaching.

Now, Nisha looks back with pride at what she has built. “I help professionals and businesses use words to make an impact,” she says.

Through her six-month book writing program, she helps clients tackle fears and overcome self-sabotaging behaviors. “I’ve coached over 50 professionals, guiding them from ideation to publication.”

The challenges were real—especially marketing. “As a creative, marketing was completely foreign to me. I found it absurd,” she says. But she was determined. She took online marketing courses and hired a career coach. “I had to learn subjects I never imagined I’d spend money or time on—like marketing and finance.”

She also had to adapt to a rapidly changing publishing landscape. “I had to keep up with the times,” she says.

Nisha created new offerings like ‘How to Write a Book in 30 Days’ and focused on clients who shared her passion for creativity. She describes her personal growth during this journey as “transcendental”.

It wasn’t easy, but she stands by her decision. “I’m content with my body of work—four personal books, five biographies, 10 edited books, and coaching people to become authors.” One of her titles, ‘When Your Job Sucks: Embrace Your Crazy’ (available on Amazon), helps professionals navigate career obstacles and find their purpose.

Today, she writes, coaches, and meditates, savoring the freedom she fought so hard to achieve. “This career change gave me the flexibility I needed and helped me shed the masks that kept me from myself,” she says. “Now, I am truly free.”
